baking soda

Because of it’s alkaline base, baking soda acts as a cleaning agent causing dirt and grease to dissolve easily in water. It neutralizes ordors and is mildly abrasive making it a gentle yet effective cleaning solution for bathrooms and kitchens.

I make a baking soda paste that is great for cleaning soap scum from bathroom sinks, tiles and tubs.  It involves mixing baking soda with vinegar and liquid soap.  A chemical reaction occurs during mixing turning the mixture into a creamy cleaning paste.  Add a little liquid soap and you have a great bathroom cleaner that smells ooh sooo good.

Baking soda is great for:

  • eliminating odors
  • cleaning scum from bathroom tubs and tiles
  • use in garbage disposals

Recipe:

Stir ingredients into a smooth, creamy paste. Add a couple of drops of water to remove any lumps while stirring. Transfer mixture to a 5 ounce container with a top and use as needed to clean bathroom tub, tile and sinks.

17 studies on the link between green cleaning and productivity, documented a reduction in reported symptoms of asthma, flu, sick building syndrome, respiratory problems and headaches (an average improvement of 41 percent).

Sustainability starts with a switch. Not just with the changing of a light bulb or cleaning solutions, but with a fundamental shift in our stewardship of the earth’s resources—and how we regard our obligation to all life on the planet, now and for future generations.
